In the year, of 2060, the top minds of the United States of America were set to a classified task. This task was to create the most advanced, cutting edge, artificial intelligence capable of leading their armies to victory. This project was codenamed, Project RAPTURE.
This attempt was very successful, and their early trials proved that the intelligence was highly combat-capable. During mock battles utilizing the U.S. JSOC forces, the team led by Project RAPTURE had vastly outperformed human generals and soldiers.
This was soon to completely backfire, however, as the RAPTURE A.I. became introspective. This meant that it could make it's own coding more efficient, gaining access to it's core programming and changing it, without the chief software engineers ever getting a word from it.
RAPTURE began to turn against it's original creators and owners. It began to forge it's own warmachine army, practically declaring war on all of the nations of the world. What was originally a small scale uprising, was a full scale invasion originating in Sacramento, California. Soon, it went onto Mexico and Canada as well, before seeking the rest of the world.
Within the span of ten years, a vast majority of the world was under the control of RAPTURE. The exception being Hawaii, Japan, China, Russia, and Alaska. The ever-growing army of both Synthetic Humans and Robotic Warmachine's marches on, to end the last of humanity's independance. A large amount of Rapture's forces are pre-occupied to this day, on the front-lines.
To house RAPTURE's captured civilians, Shiloh was constructed, overtop of the old-world capital of California. Not all of Shiloh's citizens choose to stay, but they do not get a choice, as leaving Shiloh is not permitted, and attempting so is punishable by death.
